Foods, Fruits and Fats... I Beg Your Pardons?

I was supposed to blog about the recent revelation that KL city has been voted the third rudest city in the world. Had my opening paragraph and anecdotes all ready in my head when I suddenly realized that what I'm about to rant instead has me all riled up! So, I 86-ed the rude-city-dwellers commentary and here I am. As I was saying, this has been really irritating the crap out of me. Since when did we pronounce the words food, fruit (although some have argued there are two schools of thought here) and fat with an 's' at the end? It's just bloody wrong! Before putting forward my arguments, I did do my homework, really. I checked all the dictionaries I have at home and those on-line as well. There are no such words as foods, fruits and fats. It is so rampant now that even news anchors and a certain day-time TV talk show host pronounce food as foods. Let's explore shall we? We all know you can't count food, unless it is the types of food. It is not one food and two.... foods? Shees. Food, fruit and fat are nouns and are all plural.
That is also the same case for fruit and fat. I must admit I myself say it as fruits because well, it's debatable. The mighty dictionaries says otherwise evidently. Now, fat is fat and not fats. Please... it just sounds wrong like foods. Our nation capital has already been voted the third rudest city in the world, so let's not perpetuate the "people-who-can't-speak-English-well" vicious cycle shall we?

Happy Birthday Sarah Jane!

My niece is three years old today. Her parents gave her a present which most kids her age probably dreams of having .... her first bike! Equipped with all the colourful trimmings fit for a child. Not only that, she also got a Nemo chocolate birthday cake! Needless to say Sarah was elated. I'm sure we all remember that moment when we got our first bikes, right? Mine was a blue BMX bike my father gave me when I turned seven. It is during these special moments that I think all of us will keep in our hearts forever.
Here are few of the precious snapshots of Sarah's special moment.

Germany's Michael Ballack

This is the only time that I choose to partake in the testosterone-driven event of loud cheering and screams of Goooaaaaal! which gives some sort of an adrenaline rush I can't quite describe. Yes, the World Cup season is here. Mamak eateries will obviously be experiencing brisk business for the next month, what with those giant big-screen TVs showing all the matches. Clinics will also hear the soothing sounds of 'ka-ching!' since most blokes willl probably be making a beeline to get their much needed MCs, you know for their "migraines", "food-poisoning", "back-aches" and "diarhhoea" after those late-night matches leading them to their sleep-deprivation. Ya ha.
I don't consider myself a football kaki since I only watch it once every four years - the pinnacle of football matches - The World Cup. To join in the camaraderie of it all is not only fun but also makes me more intuned with the world beyond the borders of politics, crime and which celebrity is next in line to adopt a Cambodian baby. It is also a way to make myself well-rounded. There's nothing wrong with that, right? Although my brother-in-law called me a "fake football fan" because I only watch the matches to ogle at the hot-looking players (Exhibit A - picture above). Fine! So shoot me. I still pay attention to the game in its entirety and if you ask me the next day, I will still remember who scored the goals and who got a yellow card.
Anyway, the World Cup I think got off to a good start with the first game between Germany and Costa Rica. The Big Guns verses the Underdogs. A match between David and Goliath. Germany of course beat CR with 4-2. There was no way they were gonna lose the first game on their home turf. Myself, Aliff and Brendon (who came only at the second half) caught the match at Pelita Nasi Kandar in SS 15, together with a whole lot of other footy enthusiasts all hopped up on roti canai and teh tarik. There was clearly a pool going on within a small group of Taikohs, all in the name of the game.
It's gonna be a good season to see which of these bad boys - Brazil, England, Germany and Argentina - will make it to the finals. So I say, let's join in the fun!
