Foods, Fruits and Fats... I Beg Your Pardons?
I was supposed to blog about the recent revelation that KL city has been voted the third rudest city in the world. Had my opening paragraph and anecdotes all ready in my head when I suddenly realized that what I'm about to rant instead has me all riled up! So, I 86-ed the rude-city-dwellers commentary and here I am. As I was saying, this has been really irritating the crap out of me. Since when did we pronounce the words food, fruit (although some have argued there are two schools of thought here) and fat with an 's' at the end? It's just bloody wrong! Before putting forward my arguments, I did do my homework, really. I checked all the dictionaries I have at home and those on-line as well. There are no such words as foods, fruits and fats. It is so rampant now that even news anchors and a certain day-time TV talk show host pronounce food as foods. Let's explore shall we? We all know you can't count food, unless it is the types of food. It is not one food and two.... foods? Shees. Food, fruit and fat are nouns and are all plural.
That is also the same case for fruit and fat. I must admit I myself say it as fruits because well, it's debatable. The mighty dictionaries says otherwise evidently. Now, fat is fat and not fats. Please... it just sounds wrong like foods. Our nation capital has already been voted the third rudest city in the world, so let's not perpetuate the "people-who-can't-speak-English-well" vicious cycle shall we?
